On Sunday, April 7, 2013 I attended the East Coast Premiere of Do Not Duplicate at the Palm Beach International Film Festival in Palm Beach County, Florida. The screening was held at the Frank Theatres CineBowl & Grille in Delray Beach.
A documentary about a locksmith? How can this be interesting, you ask? But writer/co-director/producer Jonathan Mann and co-director/cinematographer/editor Sean McGing’s Do Not Duplicate isn’t just a profile of a guy who makes keys. No, far from it.
Phil Mortillaro runs Greenwich Locksmiths in New York City’s West Village, and has done so for decades. Everyone in the area knows him, from the time when this was a sleepy, low rent neighborhood until its transformation into a tony, high class, high rent section of the city’s desirable Greenwich Village. His quaint little shop is the smallest free-standing building in Manhattan.
