RED CARPET MONITOR: “Moonlight” takes home the most from Gotham Awards

ifp_gothamsThe 26th annual Gotham Awards were handed out Monday night in New York. The three hour show, hosted by comedian Keegan Michael Key, featured tributes to Oliver Stone, Ethan Hawke, Amy Adams, and producer Arnon Milchan. “Moonlight” was the big winner of the evening, taking Best Feature, Best Screenplay, and a special jury award for ensemble cast.

The awards, the first to be awarded each year, is not a reliable Oscar predictor because so many times, such as this year, nominees here are not necessarily likely nominees for the Academy, especially in the acting categories. IFP, which hosts and awards the Gothams, does not offer Supporting categories, instead offering a breakthrough performance award for rising young actors and actresses.

I watched part of the ceremony online, and I have to be honest – they need to cut this show in half. They only give ten awards, and fetes or not, it need not take THREE HOURS to do. At one point there was FORTY MINUTES between presentation of actual awards which is unforgivable, and probably why the Gothams will never land on television; they are presently relegated to an online telecast.
