#31 – Romania
“Alcohol You”
Songwriters: Ionuț Armaș, Viky Red, Breyan Isaac

eCinemaOne, The Kirkham Report, and Planet BiblioMusica has begun its Countdown To the now-cancelled Eurovision Song Contest 2020! Over 41 days I’m bringing you all the info on each song this year ranked in order of my personal preference from bottom to top. I’ll give the reasons for my personal rankings, and some background info on the song, artist, songwriters, and such.  Again, these are MY opinions, and I realize that the ESC fan community is a rabid one, and rarely everyone agrees with everyone else, so as they say, your mileage may vary. As of the official announcement on March 20 2020, ALL of this year’s songs are now officially “lost”; Eurovision’s executive committee has stated that all songs in the ESC 2021 contest MUST be new, so there will never be an “Official” winner of ESC 2020 thanks to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak causing the contest’s first-ever cancellation. So this is my only chance to rank them.

In at #31 this year is the official entry from Romania, “Alcohol You” by Roxen. It is performed in English. It was scheduled to be performed 16th at the first semifinal on May 12. The song was the winner of Romania’s national final, Selecția Națională 2020, and released in various countries on February 21. Roxen has officially been invited to represent her nation in ESC 2021.

20-year-old Larisa Roxana Giurgiu has been singing much of her life, and last year, her debut single in Romania, “Ce-ți cântă dragostea“, was a number one hit there.

What I’m thinking about this song…Roxen has a such a beautiful voice…I really wish I could see what everyone else is seeing in this song…it’s just not very good. Lyrically the song is an utter mess, and talk about depressing…this song gives new meaning to that word. Hopeless is more like it. Yes I REALIZE that is the POINT of the song, but I just don’t think they did it very well lyrically, and the weird, off-kilter lyric video didn’t help it either.  At least the full video makes some semblance of sense. Yeesh. Is it going to be a hit? Yes, that’s obvious. Does it DESERVE to be? Not really, no. But that has never stopped the rabid ESC Fandom community before…

Romania made their debut in Eurovision in 1994, but due to various reasons, they have only participated 20 times including this year. They have not been able to capture a Grand Final win as yet, but have finished as high as third place, which they have managed twice, in 2005 and 2010. Romania has also managed to make every final each year they’ve participated since the semi-final round was introduced in 2004 until 2018, when they just missed the final, finishing their semi-final in 11th place; they failed to qualify in 2019 as well.

Beginning later this week, I will have a status list up over at The Kirkham Report site, with listings of what songs and artists have had their fate decided for next year’s contest –  I am diligently trying to find the full status of each act and song so we can keep track of it.
