COUNTDOWN TO (CANCELLED) EUROVISION: #7 – NORTH MACEDONIA
eCinemaOne, The Kirkham Report, and Planet BiblioMusica has begun its Countdown To the now-cancelled Eurovision Song Contest 2020! Over 41 days I’m bringing you all the info on each song this year ranked in order of my personal preference from bottom to top. I’ll give the reasons for my personal rankings, and some background info on the song, artist, songwriters, and such. Again, these are MY opinions, and I realize that the ESC fan community is a rabid one, and rarely everyone agrees with everyone else, so as they say, your mileage may vary. As of the official announcement on March 20 2020, ALL of this year’s songs are now officially “lost”; Eurovision’s executive committee has stated that all songs in the ESC 2021 contest MUST be new, so there will never be an “Official” winner of ESC 2020 thanks to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak causing the contest’s first-ever cancellation. So this is my only chance to rank them. The songs will all be spotlighted on a special called Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, which will air LIVE on May 16, when the Grand Final should have been held, so that’s at least SOMETHING…
We have officially reached TOP TEN TERRITORY! If you’re keeping track of the countdown, you should know what songs are still to come, heh heh…
In at #7 this year is the official entry from North Macedonia, “You” by Vasil. It is performed in English, and was scheduled to be performed 5th at the first semifinal on May 12. The song was chosen internal selection, and the country has not yet confirmed their plans for ESC 20201.
If you’ve been watching the Eurovision Home Concerts series, you probably have already discovered what a diverse musician Vasil Garvanliev is; his home performance of “You” was a winner, and he also did a terrific job with his cover, mashing up Helena Paparizou‘s “My Number One” and Netta‘s “Toy” because they came in with a 50/50 tie in the Instagram vote – it was hilarious and fun and brilliant all at the same time.
What I’m thinking about this song…I have a question to ask the European ESC Fandom – WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? You put your love and often RABID support into truly blase songs like “On Fire” and “Tears Getting Sober” this year, and completely ignore or totally blow off on one of this years’ true gems! I don’t get you people…never have, never will. Vasil’s voice is just absolutely GLORIOUS! The man has an amazing range – at least three octaves are on display in this song – the song has class and style, the dance beat utterly infectious, and even the video is memorable and fun. Why is there NO LOVE coming for this song? Only two or three people have actually shown support for it in the online community, and IT DESERVES BETTER. And what’s more, there’s HOPE – you fans did the SAME THING to last years’ entry from North Macedonia, “Proud” by Tamara Todevska, often placing it in your bottom 10 or 15 songs – thank goodness the national juries knew better than to listen to you – the song WON the jury vote last year, helping it capture a top ten spot (it was my #1 song last year), and I can only hope that the juries this year would have found all the utter awesomeness of this song that the ESC fandom apparently cannot or will not see, and propelled it into the finals, because I have no doubt Vasil would have absolutely NAILED it live….the man has made me a fan FOR LIFE…because of the inexplicable fan indifference, it gets my vote for most horribly underrated song of the 2020 contest…So there. TC has spoken…heh heh…
North Macedonia has been around in EuroVision since 1998, missing a couple years here and there. From their debut through 2018, they had competed as FYR Macedonia. and unfortunately, they did not fare very well in the 19 times they’ve participated thus far. But…It’s amazing what a name change can do…after missing the previous six Grand Finals in a row…as noted above, they came ROARING BACK in 2019, as “Proud” by Tamara Todevska overcame the horrible odds from the fans last year, and TOPPED the Jury votes…and finished in 7th place over all, their best ever showing. So some people obviously came to their senses last year…I sure hope they would have done the same this year…but somehow, I doubt it…
